Estimation Makes Sense!
Estimation is one of the most useful tools we can use in math. We use it almost every day to determine about how much money items will cost, about how big something might be, about how long it might take us to get somewhere, or about how many people might be in attendance, and, unfortunately, how much bills and repairs might cost! These are all situations where an exact answer is not necessary. Students are taught how to estimate at most grade levels by rounding. If we can get our children to be very comfortable with this strategy, then they can use it in many ways. They can even use it to see if their answer to a math problem "makes sense" or is "reasonable". Encourage your child to estimate whenever possible using the word "about". Learning to estimate will certainly be a lifelong skill! |
