Strategies to Build Conceptual Understanding of Division
Here, the student drew a representation that showed how 54 tennis balls can be divided equally between 3 bins, with 18 in each bin. She checked her work by adding three groups of 18 and got the whole of 54.

This student is practicing a partial quotient strategy. He decided to grab 36 and give 12 tennis balls to each of the three groups. Then he grabbed the remaining 18 and gave 6 tennis balls to each of the three groups. It took him two grabs to take all the tennis balls and share them equally between the three bins. In order to find out the total quotient, he added up the fair shares: 12 + 6 = 18. So, 54 divided by 3 = 18.
